[Snurched from the interwebs…]

So It’s time to talk about NaNoWriMo. Those of you who already know what it is bare with me please… Every Novemeber mass insanity descends suddenly on amateur and professional novel writers everywhere, and they decide to do a preposterous thing. This thing that they decide to do is to write a novel of fifty thousand words or more inside the sapce of a month. Now, there are certain qualifiers here, as editing and finishing a novel in that length of time would be quite ridiculous. Really it’s just getting a first draft down, and for many of us not even that, just a bunch of words, at least fifty thousand to be exact. But it gets us to get our butt in the seat and to start writing every day, and that is what is most important, at least to me.

So NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month is about to begin. I have participated now for three separate years… and finished not once (though I’ve accumulated around eighty or ninety thousand words, disjointed with no narrative). Which is annoying my greatly this year. I have decided to try once again; and although the looming crazy schedule at the end of Novemeber ALWAYS complicates things, I am going to do my best. I need to get words on paper, so to speak, before I’ll know if I’m any good at any of this.

Now there are some tricks to finishing NaNo, you’re witnessing one of them now, I call it Meta Writing Word Stuffing. This is when you write about your process using as many unnecessary words as possible to increse your word count. It’s nothing you’d want to actually put in the novel, but it helps to keep your fingers moving and your mind thinking about sentences and narrative and stuff. And eventually, like about now, you get sick of writing about process and can force yourslef to actually go do some writing. So that’s what I’m going to do.

Over the course of the next month I’ll be posting here about my NaNo experience, and every word will be counted (because It’s written in November(ish)) towards my NaNo goal. Hope not to bore you all to death!
